Local Area Coordination
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will work to support people with disability to participate in and contribute to social and economic life, as well as provide certainty that people with disability will receive the care and support they need over their lifetime. The NDIS provides a number of ways to assist people with disability to exercise choice, including taking reasonable risks in the pursuit of their goals and the planning and delivery of their supports. One of the ways this is done is through Local Area Coordination (LAC).
This page will help you understand how Local Area Coordination will work over the next three years from 2016 to 2019 as the NDIS is rolled out across the country. This is called the transition period.

Local Area Coordination will be delivered by our Partners in the Community. Partners and the NDIA will work closely to build and improve the way the Scheme is delivered to make sure it works for people with disability in the best possible way.
The Partners in the Community Program enables the Scheme to be implemented at a local community level. The NDIA is looking to partner with suitably experienced and qualified organisations, with strong local knowledge and understanding of the needs of people with disability or developmental delay, to deliver Local Area Coordination under the Program.
The NDIA will establish these partnerships to build on existing relationships, voluntary and community action enabling people with disability to gain the benefits of community membership. These benefits include maintaining or gaining employment and participating in everyday activities and community life in natural settings.
Local Area Coordination will work with both individuals and the community in areas in your state and territory.

Local Area Coordinators have three key roles:
- They will link you to the NDIS
- Link you to information and support in the community, and
- Work with their local community to make sure it is more welcoming and inclusive for people with disability.
Link you to the NDIS
If you need to access the NDIS, there are a few stages to your pathway – from understanding and requesting access, to developing and implementing your first plan. For information about the Participant Pathway please click on NDIS Participant Planning.
Local Area Coordinators can help you as you move from stage to stage on your pathway with the NDIS. Local Area Coordinators can help you to:
Understand the NDIS – This can include workshops or individual conversations giving you information about the NDIS
Access the NDIS – If you are currently receiving disability supports, your provider may be able to give us information we need for you. If you are not currently receiving supports, you will need to contact us when the NDIS is available in your area.
Create a first plan – This will include having a conversation to learn about your current situation and supports and connect you to your local community
Put your NDIS plan into action
- Help you find and start receiving the services you need from support providers in your NDIS plan
- Help you self-direct or self-manage your NDIS plan. Find an information pack about what these are on our website NDIS website.
- Find mainstream services and community services that help you achieve your goals
Review your plan – While everyone is different, your first plan will generally be in place for 12 months before we work with you to make changes. This is called a plan review. Before you start your plan review, it can be helpful for you to explore options to get involved in your local community through activities such as sports clubs, local theatres, special interest groups and community gardening. You can also think about your short and long term goals. Local Area Coordinators can help this by helping you work through questions like:
- What would a good life be for you?
- What are some words or pictures that help you prepare for your future?
- What do you like?
- What are you good at?
- What needs to change to get the life you need?
- Who else is in your life you can include?
- What supports now are helping and which are not?
- What would need to happen for you to be able to participate more actively in your community?
It is important to remember Local Area Coordinators do not provide case management, act as an advocate for the person with disability, and they cannot approve an NDIS plan.
Link you to information and support in your community
By linking you to information and support in your community, you will be more informed, connected and able to participate in the things you want to do. This is important to help build skills and confidence so that you have the information to take part in fun, interesting and different activities in the community.
Local Area Coordinators will help people with a disability, by:
- helping you find information and options about support in your local community such as how to engage with the NDIS and manage your NDIS plan
- helping you understand what you can expect from mainstream supports – this is supports like education, health, housing, transport, training and employment
- helping sustain informal supports around you – this is family, friends and local community members.
Importantly the Local Area Coordinators will work very closely with organisations that provide Information Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) at the local level. You can find more information on ILC here
