What reasonable and necessary is
The NDIS rules say all NDIS supports need to meet the reasonable and necessary criteria before we can fund them in your plan.
Reasonable and necessary NDIS supports need to:
- relate to your disability
- help you work towards your goals
- help you to work, study and take part in social activities
- be value for money
- be likely to be effective and beneficial to you
- work with mainstream supports and others in your network
- be an NDIS support or agreed replacement support for you.
Reasonable and necessary NDIS supports can't:
- include day-to-day living costs
- include attendance at events or holidays
- be the same as supports already provided to you by family or other mainstream and community services
- be illegal or harmful to you or others
- be a replacement for income.
What reasonable and necessary is for
Your NDIA planner looks at the information and evidence you give us. They then assess it with the reasonable and necessary criteria and NDIS rules. Your NDIA planner then decides what NDIS supports can be funded in your plan.
Your NDIA planner will also look at:
- if you share a support with anyone
- how much of the support you need including hours, items or equipment
- how often you need the support including days, weeks, months or years.
Each NDIS support in your plan must be reasonable and necessary. They also need to be reasonable and necessary as a package of supports.
What reasonable and necessary is like
Reasonable and necessary NDIS supports look different for each participant. This is because the NDIS supports you receive funding for are based on your individual situation and your disability support needs. They will also be based on the information and evidence you give us.
Learn about our decisions at your plan meeting
You’ll be invited to a plan meeting once your NDIA planner has reviewed your information and evidence to decide the reasonable and necessary NDIS supports to create your plan.
Your NDIA planner will explain decisions about reasonable and necessary NDIS supports in your plan at your plan meeting. They’ll also ask about your situation to make sure the supports in your plan fit together to help you work towards your goals.
