NDIS concepts in Auslan
Many NDIS concepts have not previously been translated into Auslan so equivalent ways of signing them is required. A diverse linguistic team was formed to create the signs to ensure they are accurate and reflect the diversity of language in Auslan across Australia. These signs were created for the purpose of translating existing information into Auslan, but they have been provided to help all Auslan speakers understand and talk about NDIS concepts in the same way.
What is the NDIS
This video will help you understand key information about the NDIS including what it is, if you can access it, when it will be available, and why it’s important.

NDIS support lists now available in Auslan
On 3 October 2024, a new definition of NDIS supports was introduced.
NDIS supports are the goods and services that NDIS participants can purchase with their NDIS funding.
Under the new definition, supports have been separated into two lists. This means participants:
- can only spend NDIS funding on things that are in the list of NDIS supports.
- cannot spend NDIS funding on things that are in the list of not NDIS supports.
These lists apply to all participants.
To make it easier for our deaf or hard of hearing participants, we have published the support lists in Auslan.
Participants can access this important information in a way that suits them best.
The creation of the lists was a recommendation from the NDIS Review, that greater transparency around funding supports was needed.
You can learn more about the new definition of NDIS supports and the lists on the Our Guidelines website.

Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Strategy
We developed and co-designed a Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CALD) Strategy 2024–2028 (the Strategy).
Co-design means we worked with and learned from participants, friends, family, carers, NDIS staff and the disability community.
We co-designed the Strategy with over 800 people from CALD backgrounds.
This is our commitment to improving the NDIS so we can meet the cultural and language needs of all our participants.
To help us deliver the Strategy, we developed and co-designed an Action Plan.
It outlines the different steps we need to take to carry out the Strategy. There are 28 actions to complete.
