Camperdown local Andrew knows life can change in an instant. Once a full-time worker, a rare condition reshaped his world.
Able to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), the 60-year-old who has declining mobility said the support he gets means he and wife Nerida can live at home enjoying the country lifestyle they prefer.
‘I don’t know where I’d be without the NDIS. It’s given me back my life,’ he said.
Andrew’s journey began years ago when he lost feeling in both feet. Doctor’s couldn’t explain why. Unable to stand for hours, he was forced to give up work.
Andrew remains positive and credits the NDIS for its support.
‘My plan covers all I need,’ he said. `I’m in constant contact with my physio, occupational therapist and support coordinator, and I have a great team of support workers.’
To foster independence, Andrew has a wheelchair at home and an electric scooter to access shops.
‘I also have support for community access and an adjustable hand-held shower head, handrails and a plinth have been installed to prevent any falls,’ he said.
‘For years I couldn’t access my backyard, so a wider door, ramp and handrails were installed. Now I can get a good grip on the handrails to pull myself up to do things.’
This support has given Andrew and Nerida confidence in the future.
‘Eventually, I’ll be in an electric wheelchair. I’ve talked to my planner about what my condition may look like as it progresses, even the supports I might need. It’s comforting support is available if I need it,’ he said.
‘It also means Nerida doesn’t have to be my full-time carer. She can still run her own business. She doesn’t have to stop and worry about looking after me.’
