The Supported Decision Making Advisory Group met on 12 June 2025 for the second time.
The meeting was held online.
Focus of the meeting
The focus of the June meeting was:
- New Framework Planning
- Best practice supported decision making
- Ways of Working.
New Framework Planning
The Agency provided a deep dive into new participant pathway to understand supported decision making opportunities, which included:
- A review of the elements of the Supported Decision Making Policy and Implementation Plan that are within the NDIA’s scope to implement.
- The NDIA sought feedback on members’ views on what are the priority areas to focus on to inform a work plan and how the NDIA can best utilise members’ expertise and insights.
- The NDIA sought advice from members on a co-design approach with participants with supported decision making needs. A focus on the beginning of the pathway at ‘Confirming Impairments’ for the Group’s first deep dive into New Framework Planning.
Best practice supported decision making
- The Agency led a discussion with members about examples of ways to provide decision making supports to help inform the development of the Support Needs Assessment Tool.
- The Agency gave an overview of the major procurement of the support needs assessment and the budgeting initiative.
- A number of NDIS leaders undertook a robust evaluation of the supported decision making assessment tools and finalised an evaluation report to continue engagement with the preferred tenderer, subject to CEO approval.
- The Agency wants to ensure that throughout the supported decision making process, information is accessible, and participants understand the decisions they need to make and what options are available to them.
- This includes enabling ways for participants to consider the pros and cons of the options. And ensuring carers or nominated persons are equipped to help participants make decisions.
