$86 million in dodgy NDIS claims blocked

The NDIA has run a fine-tooth comb over more than 100,000 claims by NDIS providers, plan managers and participants to ensure only legitimate claims are paid.

As a result of this dedicated effort to crack down on fraud, $86 million worth of claims were rejected.

The campaign was carried out via both pre-payment reviews (PPR) and manual payment reviews (MPR) from 2024-25.

Where these reviews identify concerns, the NDIA initiates further investigations into historic claims and may also partner with other agencies in the Fraud Fusion Taskforce to investigate.

20,000 high-risk claims are currently being reviewed each month.

The Government has invested more than $550 million to build NDIS integrity and grow compliance. This includes:

  • $345.3 million in the Crack Down on Fraud program
  • $152.8 million to create the Fraud Fusion Taskforce, which now numbers 23 agencies and is co-led by the NDIA
  • $56 million to fund the NDIA’s payment integrity review workforce. This money supports staff responsible for PPRs & MPRs.

Our programs are backed by the largest fraud and integrity workforce in the Scheme’s history. There are more than 800 specialists working on fraud, integrity and compliance – compared with little more than 100 people working in these roles in 2020/21.

The Fraud Fusion Taskforce has launched more than 635 investigations since it was created in November 2022.

The rate of successful prosecutions on NDIS matters has since doubled, with 20 successful criminal prosecutions since November 2022.

In the first 4 months of 2025, the NDIA has participated in the execution of 35 warrants.

In the 4 calendar years from 2018-2021, prior to the establishment of the Taskforce, the NDIA participated in the execution of just 30 warrants.

Quotes Attributable to Senator Jenny McAllister, Minister for the NDIS:

“We want to make sure every NDIS dollar is spent on supporting Australians with disability.

“Running a fine-toothed comb through the payment system means that taxpayer's money gets spent on support that makes a real difference to people’s lives.

“The vast majority of NDIS providers are outstanding organisations who do very important work. We are going after those operating in the shadows, exploiting the scheme and taking money from people with a disability.”
