Sentencing follows Taskforce action to protect NDIS participants

A former NDIS provider has been sentenced after a Fraud Fusion Taskforce investigation revealed proof that the provider had solicited participant data from an NDIA staff member.

Amit Sharma had pleaded guilty in Parramatta District Court to three counts of soliciting disclosure of protected Agency information and was today sentenced for this crime.

Sharma, 46, received 14 months imprisonment to be served through an Intensive Corrections Order with 90 hours of community service and a $1,850 fine for the offences committed in 2022 and 2023.

Following tip-offs, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) launched the September 2023 Fraud Fusion Taskforce investigation that established Sharma, who was the owner and operator of two NDIS registered provider businesses in Sydney, was soliciting protected Agency Information from an NDIA staff member.

The former employee, who was sentenced to an Intensive Corrections Order in May 2025, supplied the provider with information for the purpose of recruiting clients for his businesses.

The NDIA worked alongside Australian Federal Police to execute a search warrant at the offender’s home in NSW, seizing documents and electronic devices.

The Agency also worked with another Taskforce partner, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, to secure lifetime bans against the provider and his businesses and his NDIS registrations were revoked.

NDIA acting CEO Scott McNaughton said the Agency was continuously improving safeguards and privacy protections for participants.

“We have strengthened our safeguards, tightened access controls and expanded monitoring to ensure participant information is protected at every stage,” Mr McNaughton said.

“We have zero tolerance for any misuse of participant data and will act swiftly, like we did in this matter, against anyone who seeks to exploit participants and the Scheme.”

Strengthening the integrity and security of the NDIS, the Fraud Fusion Taskforce has expanded to 23 partner agencies since it was established by the Australian Government in November 2022.
