An exciting journey towards independance for John and his children

Posted on 06 July 2017
Tasmania father of two, John is slowly getting more time to himself as his two children with disabilities become more independent with the help of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Both children have intellectual disabilities, Bridget the eldest is 22 and she has what is called a chromosomal deletion. Riley is 20 and he has autism.

With two different sets of disabilities, both children have two completely different sets of needs.

Through the intervention of the NDIS, Bridget has been able to move into external residence with carer support. John says "she’s finding a home for herself beyond me, beyond the family home, that is what every parent wants for their child."

Riley is gaining independence with one-to-one support every second Saturday and Sunday, getting him out of the house, and giving John some time to himself.

John says that on "those days I’m gaining a little bit of life back and that will evolve over time too."
