Support for Decision Making consultation summary report

We are pleased to share with you the results of our recent Support for Decision Making consultation.

Over a 12 week period earlier this year, we asked you to provide feedback on:

  • how we can help improve your experience of making decisions
  • how to help the people around you to support you to make your own decisions.

We received 85 written submissions and 195 online survey responses. We also held a number of engagement activities including:

  • 2 public information sessions and 16 national online consultation sessions
  • 3 sessions with members of the Participant First Engagement Initiative
  • targeted engagement with groups and organisations who may benefit from support for decision making.

Through the consultation, we identified a number of themes:

  • we need to make sure people have informed decision supporters and the time and resources they need to make decisions
  • we need to make sure we are learning from existing work about support for decision making and we need to work with the disability community and other government departments to build on these
  • we need to do more work to get our approach right. You want us to work with you to get our policy and implementation plan right.

We are very grateful to everyone that took the time to provide feedback.

Your feedback has been published in a post-consultation summary report linked below, which is also available in EasyRead and Auslan. We will also run a series of community information sessions in early 2022 to answer your questions about the consultation process and provide more information on next steps.

Read individual submissions

We have also published individual submissions, where consent was provided. Read the individual submissions.

The release of this feedback is part of our ongoing commitment to NDIS participants, providers and the disability sector for greater transparency.

Next steps

In 2022, we will start a co-design process to:

  • build on the feedback we have already received through these consultations
  • build a strong and shared understanding of the challenges and barriers participants, nominees and providers experience in relation to Support for Decision Making
  • design a new policy and implementation plan for Support for Decision Making.

We will also use your feedback to:

  • make improvements to our existing policies, guidance, processes and systems that relate to support for decision making
  • work with other government departments to enhance opportunities for people with disability to make decisions and build their capacity to do this.

We are still working with disability community stakeholders on the approach we should take for co-design. We will continue to provide status updates on our co-design work on the NDIS website and social media channels.
